Taxonomy: Tetrastes Sewerzowi Przevalski, 1876, mountains of Gansu, central China.
Closely related to B. bonasia, with which forms superspecies. In past, birds of S and W often awarded separate race, secunda. Monotypic.
Distribution: Mountains of C China, from C Gansu and S Qinghai to E Tibet, NW Yunnan and N Sichuan.
