Taxonomy: Charadrius semipalmatus Bonaparte, 1825, coast of New Jersey.
Probably forms superspecies with C. hiaticula, with which sometimes considered conspecific; some hybridization on Baffin I. Monotypic.
Distribution: Alaska and N Canada, S to C British Columbia and S Nova Scotia. Winters on coasts of North and South America, from California to Chile, and from South Carolina to Patagonia; also Bermuda, West Indies, Galapagos.
