Taxonomy: Uppucerthia nigro-fumosa d’Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1838, Cobija, “Bolivia” (= northern Chile.
Forms a superspecies with C. taczanowskii and may be conspecific; no indication that difference between the two is any greater than that found among races of e.g. C. fuscus. Monotypic.

Distribution: Coast of N & C Chile from Arica S to Valdivia, including I de los Pájaros and MochaI.
