Taxonomy: Indicator variegatus Lesson, 1830, Knysna, South Africa.
Forms a superspecies with I. maculatus, barely overlapping with it in SW Sudan and W Uganda. Despite widespread distribution, exhibits mosaic geographical pattern of variation, as well as varying individually, seasonally and with age, rendering accurate racial subdivision impossible for present; birds from S Somalia to NE Tanzania formerly separated in race jubaensis. Monotypic.
Distribution: S Ethiopia and S Sudan to S Somalia, S through E Africa (W to E Rwanda and E Burundi), and from C Angola E to E Zaire and W Tanzania, S to Zambia, E Zimbabwe and E Cape Province.
