Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner (Anabacerthia variegaticeps) - HBW 8, p. 328

French: Anabate à lunettes German: Ockerbrillen-Blattspäher Spanish: Ticotico de Anteojos
Other common names: Scaly-breasted/Spectacled/Mountain Foliage-gleaner, Scaly-throated Leaf-gleaner; Spot-breasted/Colombian Foliage-gleaner (temporalis)

Taxonomy: Anabazenops variegaticeps P. L. Sclater, 1857, Córdoba, Veracruz, southern Mexico.
Genus sometimes merged into a broadly defined Philydor. Forms a superspecies with A. striaticollis. Distinctive race temporalis more similar to latter and treated by some authors as a race of it; was formerly considered a separate species, and perhaps better maintained as such until relationships resolved. Proposed race idoneus from W Panama, described as like nominate but paler (more olivaceous) above and yellowish-olive (not rufescent) below, is regarded as representing individual variation and not diagnosable. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • schaldachi Winker, 1997 - mountains of SW Mexico (Guerrero).
  • variegaticeps (P. L. Sclater, 1857) - mountains from S Mexico (Caribbean slope S from Veracruz, Pacific slope S from Oaxaca) S to W Panama (W Chiriquí).
  • temporalis (P. L. Sclater, 1859) - W Andes of Colombia (S from S Chocó) and W Ecuador (S to W Loja, also coastal cordilleras in W Esmeraldas and SW Manabí).
