Other common names: Sharpe’s Crane (sharpii)

Taxonomy: Ardea Antigone Linnaeus, 1758, India.
Recently described race gilliae sometimes still included within sharpii. Possible race luzonica, endemic to Philippines, now presumed extinct; possibly synonymous with gilliae or sharpii, or both. Three extant subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • antigone (Linnaeus, 1758) - N India, Nepal and (formerly?) Bangladesh.
  • sharpii Blanford, 1895 - Cambodia and S Laos; winters in Vietnam; status in E India and Myanmar uncertain.
  • gilliae Schodde, 1988 - N Australia, mainly in Queensland only scattered populations elsewhere.
