Taxonomy: Psittacus purpuratus J. F. Gmelin, 1788, Cayenne.
Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- viridiceps Chapman, 1929 - S Venezuela S from Cerro Duida into N Brazil on upper R Negro and W to SE Colombia, E Ecuador (one record) and NE Peru.
- purpurata (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - S Venezuela E from Cerro Duida through the Guianas to N Brazil, including lower R Negro, as far as Maranhão.
