Taxonomy: Ramphastos Bailloni Vieillot, 1819, no locality = Brazil.
Has been allied with Andigena, and even placed within that genus, but probably more closely related to Pteroglossus, though even this relationship appears to be distant. Probably a relict species, purportedly the sister taxon of Pteroglossus. Monotypic.

Distribution: E Brazil (Pernambuco; Bahía, Espírito Santo and adjacent Minas Gerais S to W & NE Santa Catarina and far N Rio Grande do Sul) to EC Paraguay and NE Argentina (N Misiones).
