Taxonomy: Tantalus aethiopicus Latham, 1790, Aethiopia = ? Egypt.
Forms superspecies with T. melanocephalus and T. molucca; these two sometimes regarded as races of T. aethiopicus. Races bernieri and abbotti very similar, perhaps better considered single form (bernieri has priority), that some regard as distinct species. Three subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- aethiopicus (Latham, 1790) - Africa S of Sahara, SE Iraq; formerly Egypt.
- bernieri (Bonaparte, 1855) - Madagascar.
- abbotti (Ridgway, 1893) - Aldabra I.
