Taxonomy: Larus Sabini J. Sabine, 1819, Sabine Islands, near Melville Bay, west coast of Greenland.
Subspecific variation poorly marked, and species often considered monotypic. Four subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • palaearctica Stegman, 1934 - Spitsbergen E to Taymyr Peninsula and Lena Delta.
  • tschuktschorum Portenko, 1939 - Chukchi Peninsula.
  • woznesenskii Portenko, 1939 - NE Siberia (Anadyr Gulf) to Alaska.
  • sabini (J. Sabine, 1819) - Arctic Canada to W Greenland.
