Taxonomy: Podiceps rufolavatus Delacour, 1932, Lake Alaotra.
Formerly included in Podiceps. Forms superspecies with T. novaehollandiae and T. ruficollis. Sometimes considered race of latter, and intensive hybridization currently occurring. Monotypic.

Distribution: L Aloatra and immediate vicinity, NC Madagascar.
