Taxonomy: Pomatorhinus erythrogenys Vigors, 1832, "the district Simla-Almora", Himalayas, north India.
Forms a species group, and has commonly been treated as conspecific, with P. mcclellandi, P. gravivox, P. swinhoei and P. erythrocnemis, all having similar plumage. Proposed race haringtoni (Himalayas from Sikkim E to Bhutan) merged with ferrugilatus. Four subspecies currently recognized.

- erythrogenys Vigors, 1832 - NE Pakistan (Murree Hills) E to N India (Uttaranchal Pradesh).
- ferrugilatus Hodgson, 1836 - Nepal E to Bhutan.
- imberbis Salvadori, 1889 - E Myanmar.
- celatus Deignan, 1941 - NW Thailand.
