Taxonomy: Proparus dubius Hume, 1874, “outskirts of the Pine forests above the Salween”, Salween District, Tenasserim, Myanmar.
Genus usually merged into Alcippe. Suggested as forming a superspecies with S. brunneus, and often considered conspecific, but the two occur sympatrically in China and differ morphologically. Individuals of present species observed in C Laos have not been assigned to race. Five subspecies recognized.

  • genestieri ( Oustalet, 1897) - S China (Yunnan E of R Salween E to SW Sichuan, W Hunan and W Guangxi), N Laos and N Vietnam (Tonkin).
