Puffbirds (Bucconidae)
Rusty-breasted Nunlet (Nonnula rubecula) - HBW 7, p. 135
French: Barbacou rufalbin
German: Rotkehl-Faulvogel
Spanish: Monjilla Macurú
Taxonomy: Bucco rubecula Spix, 1824, Malhada, Rio São Francisco, western Bahia, Brazil.
Forms a superspecies with N. sclateri and N. brunnea. Taxonomy uncertain and confused: listed races may involve more than one species; also some of listed races probably comprise more than one taxon (e.g. nominate race in E Brazil has plumage soft and silky, in SE of range plumage loosely webbed, in both cases numerous tonal differences from “typical” nominate); also validity of some recognized races possibly doubtful; extensive revision needed. Seven subspecies tentatively recognized.
