Motmots (Momotidae)

Russet-crowned Motmot (Momotus mexicanus) - HBW 6, p. 283

Taxonomy: Momotus Mexicanus Swainson, 1827, Temiscáltepec, Mexico.
Geographical variation in main part of range rather moderate, and probably clinal, with palest populations occurring in northernmost areas; isolated S population castaneiceps more distinctive, and has been proposed as possibly representing a distinct species. Four subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • vanrossemi R. T. Moore, 1932 - NW Mexico in S Sonora and northernmost Sinaloa, and adjacent SW Chihuahua.
  • mexicanus Swainson, 1827 - Sinaloa and Durango S to Guerrero, W Oaxaca and extreme W Veracruz.
  • saturatus Nelson, 1897 - E Oaxaca and Chiapas, and adjacent SW Guatemala.
  • castaneiceps Gould, 1855 - interior Guatemala, mainly in Motagua Valley.
