Taxonomy: [Minla] Castaneceps Hodgson, 1837, Nepal.
Genus often merged into Alcippe. Formerly treated as conspecific with closely related P. klossi. Birds of this species in far E Myanmar, NW Laos and C & S Yunnan (China) have not yet been assigned to race. Four subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • castaneceps ( Hodgson, 1837) - Nepal E to Bhutan and all NE Indian hill states, S China (SE Xizang, W & NW Yunnan), N, W, E & SE Myanmar and NW & W Thailand.
  • exul ( Delacour, 1932) - N Thailand, N, C & SW Laos, N Vietnam (Tonkin, N Annam) and S China (SE Yunnan E to W Guangxi).
  • stepanyani ( J. C. Eames, 2002) - SE Laos and C Vietnam.
  • soror ( Sharpe, 1887) - Peninsular Malaysia.
