Taxonomy: Thryothorus rufalbus Lafresnaye, 1845, “Mexico”; error = Guatemala.
Sometimes considered to include T. nicefori as a race. Six subspecies recognized.

- rufalbus Lafresnaye, 1845 - highlands of Guatemala and El Salvador.
- sylvus A. R. Phillips, 1986 - NW Honduras.

- rufalbus Lafresnaye, 1845 - highlands of Guatemala and El Salvador.
- sylvus A. R. Phillips, 1986 - NW Honduras.
- skutchi A. R. Phillips, 1986 - W Honduras S on Pacific slope to Panama (E to Canal Zone, also locally on Caribbean drainage).
- cumanensis (Cabanis, 1861) - N Colombia and N Venezuela (Falcón E to Paría Peninsula, S to E Guárico and S Anzoátegui).
- minlosi (Berlepsch, 1884) - NW Venezuela (W Zulia, and Cojedes S to S Táchira and W Apure) and E Colombia (S to Meta).
