Taxonomy: Ardea caledonica Gmelin, 1789, New Caledonia.
Forms superspecies with N. nycticorax, with which has hybridized in Java, Sulawesi and Philippines. Race crassirostris of Bonin Is extinct. Five subspecies recognized.
