Taxonomy: Celeus spectabilis P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1880, Sarayacu, Ecuador.
Isolated race obrieni, known from only single, female specimen, differs significantly in plumage, and data on habitat indicate major distinction from other races; possibly a separate species, but no further information available. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- spectabilis P. L. Sclater & Salvin, 1880 - E Ecuador and NE Peru.
- exsul Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1941 - SE Peru, extreme W Brazil (W Acre) and N Bolivia (Beni, N Cochabamba).
- obrieni Short, 1973 - E Brazil (W Piauí).
