Babblers (Timaliidae)
Rufous-fronted Babbler (Stachyridopsis rufifrons) - HBW 12, p. 180
French: Timalie à front roux
German: Rotstirntimalie
Spanish: Timalí Frentirrufo
Other common names: Red-fronted Babbler, Hume’s Babbler/Tree-babbler; Buff-chested Babbler (ambigua, adjuncta, planicola and insuspecta); Deignan’s Babbler (“S. rodolphei”)
Taxonomy: Stachyris rufifrons Hume, 1873, western slopes of the Pegu Hills, Lower Myanmar.
Genus formerly merged with Stachyris. Races ambigua, adjuncta, planicola and insuspecta sometimes treated as representing a separate species S. ambigua, on basis of reports of co-occurrence of certain taxa, but evidence unclear. Individuals of this genus observed in C Laos may belong with race insuspecta or with nominate race of S. ruficeps; further study required. Proposed form S. rodolphei, known only from Doi Chiang Dao, in NW Thailand, is regarded as a synonym of nominate race. Nine subspecies recognized.
