Taxonomy: Odontophorus speciosus Tschudi, 1843, Peru.
May be conspecific with three other species, O. hyperythrus, O. erythrops and O. melanonotus. Possibly most closely related to O. hyperythrus. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- soederstroemii Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922 - E & S Ecuador.
- speciosus Tschudi, 1843 - EC Peru.
- loricatus Todd, 1932 - SE Peru to E Bolivia.
