Taxonomy: Tyrannula rufipectus Lafresnaye, 1846, Colombia [= “Bogota”].
Forms a superspecies with L. taczanowskii. Birds from extreme NE of range described as race venezuelanus, but indistinguishable from populations farther S along Colombian Andes. Monotypic.

Distribution: Locally in extreme SW Venezuela (Táchira), E & C Andes of Colombia (S Antioquia and Cundinamarca S to W Caquetá), E Andes of Ecuador and extreme N Peru (Cerro Chinguela, in Piura).
