Taxonomy: Sigmodus rufiventris Bonaparte, 1853, Mozambique; error = Gabon.
Forms a superspecies, and often considered conspecific, with P. caniceps. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- rufiventris ( Bonaparte, 1853) - S Cameroon E to Central African Republic and NW DRCongo, S to Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, PRCongo and N Angola (Cabinda).
- mentalis (Sharpe, 1884) - C & NE DRCongo and W Uganda.
