Taxonomy: Tanagra rufiventris Vieillot, 1819, locality unknown = Iquitos, Peru.
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus belongs in family Fringillidae. May form a superspecies with E. pectoralis and E. cayennensis. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- carnegiei Dickerman, 1988 - S Venezuela S to headwaters of rivers Orinoco, Ventuari, Cauca, Paragua and Cuyuní.
- rufiventris (Vieillot, 1819) - E Colombia S to E Ecuador, SE Peru (Carabaya) and N Bolivia (R Surutú, in Santa Cruz), and Amazonian Brazil (E to R Negro and vicinity of R Xingu).
