Other common names: Andean Duck, Peruvian Ruddy Duck (ferruginea)
Taxonomy: Anas jamaicensis Gmelin, 1789, Jamaica.
Race ferruginea often considered a full species; race andina, intermediate between jamaicensis and ferruginea, might be of hybrid origin. Population of North America has been assigned separate subspecies rubida, though doubtfully valid. Three subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- jamaicensis (Gmelin, 1789) - Canada, from British Columbia to Manitoba, and S to California and Texas; also scattered in NE USA; West Indies.
- andina Lehmann, 1946 - Andes of C and N Colombia.
- ferruginea (Eyton, 1838) - Andes of S Colombia southwards to Tierra del Fuego.
