Taxonomy: Rallus fuscus Linnaeus, 1766, Philippines.
Sometimes placed in Amaurornis. Possible race bakeri included in nominate. Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- fusca (Linnaeus, 1766) - Pakistan and N India to SC China (Yunnan) and Vietnam, Malay Peninsula, Philippines and W Indonesia.
- zeylonica (Stuart Baker, 1927) - W India and Sri Lanka.
- erythrothorax (Temminck & Schlegel, 1849) - Japan, E & S China and Indochina; N populations winter to S.
- phaeopyga Stejneger, 1887 - Ryukyu Is.
