Taxonomy: Platalea regia Gould, 1838, east coast of New South Wales.
Considered by some to form superspecies with P. leucorodia, P. minor and P. alba. Sometimes regarded as race of P. leucorodia. Monotypic.
Distribution: Australia and New Zealand; Java and Sulawesi through Lesser Sundas and Moluccas to S New Guinea and Rennell I (Solomon Is).
