Taxonomy: Platalea Ajaja Linnaeus, 1758, in America australi = Rio São Francisco, eastern Brazil, ex Marcgraf.
Often placed in monospecific genus Ajaia. Monotypic.
Distribution: SE USA and West Indies through Mexico and C America to S America: E of Andes, S to N Argentina; W of Andes in W Ecuador and NW Peru.
