Taxonomy: Aptenodytes chrysocome J. R. Forster, 1781, Falkland Islands.
Synonymous with E. crestatus. Known to have hybridized with E. chrysolophus. Race moseleyi sometimes considered separate species; validity of race filholi sometimes questioned. Three subspecies recognized.

  • chrysocome ( J. R. Forster, 1781) - Cape Horn, Falkland Is.
  • filholi Hutton, 1879 - Southern Ocean, from Prince Edward Is E to Antipodes Is.
  • moseleyi Mathews & Iredale, 1921 - S Atlantic at Tristan da Cunha and Gough I, S Indian Ocean at Amsterdam and St Paul Is.
