Other common names: Aleutian/Pribilof Sandpiper
Taxonomy: Tringa ptilocnemis Coues, 1873, St George Island, Pribilof Islands.
Formerly placed in genus Erolia. Forms superspecies with C. maritima, with which sometimes considered conspecific. Birds from Kuril Is have on occasion been awarded separate race kurilensis. Four subspecies normally recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- quarta (Hartert, 1920) - Kuril Is, S Kamchatka and Commander Is.
- tschuktschorum Portenko, 1937 - E Chukotskiy Peninsula, St Lawrence I, Nunivak I and W Alaska; winters in NW North America and locally in E Japan.
- ptilocnemis (Coues, 1873) - St Matthew and Hall Is and Pribilof Is; winters on Alaska Peninsula.
- couesi (Ridgway, 1880) - Aleutian Is and Alaska Peninsula.
