Taxonomy: Picus robustus M. H. K. Lichtenstein, 1819, Brazil.
Formerly placed in genus Phloeoceastes with seven other species, all of which are now lumped into Campephilus. Size of present species increases slightly from N to S, but insufficient to warrant separation of any geographical races. Monotypic.
Distribution: E Brazil (S from S Bahia and E Goiás) S to E Paraguay, NE Argentina (Misiones, Corrientes) and Rio Grande do Sul.
