Taxonomy: Picus torquatus Boddaert, 1783, Cayenne.
Named race angustus (R Tapajós, Brazil) regarded as synonymous with occidentalis, which intergrades with nominate. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- occidentalis (Hargitt, 1889) - NE Ecuador, SE Colombia and W & C Amazonian Brazil E to S Venezuela, and S to E Peru, N Bolivia and Mato Grosso.
- torquatus (Boddaert, 1783) - E Venezuela and the Guianas S to Pará in NE Brazil.
- tinnunculus (Wagler, 1829) - E Brazil (SE Bahia, Espírito Santo).
