Taxonomy: Fuligula americana Eyton, 1838, North America.
Closely linked to A. valisineria and A. ferina; in spite of greater superficial similarity to latter, apparently closer to former. Monotypic.
Distribution: Main range in SW Canada and W USA, south to California, New Mexico and Nebraska; also populations in Alaska, Great Lakes region and SE Canada.
