Taxonomy: Ardea rufescens Gmelin, 1789, Louisiana.
Occasionally placed in monotypic genus Dichromanassa. White morph formerly considered separate species, Peale's Egret (A. pealii). Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- rufescens (Gmelin, 1789) - S USA and E Mexico through West Indies to N Colombia and N Venezuela.
- dickeyi (van Rossem, 1926) - W Mexico.
