Taxonomy: Tringa Indica Boddaert, 1783, Goa.
Sometimes placed in Hoplopterus or Lobivanellus. Apart from atronuchalis, differences between races mostly clinal, involving depth of gloss, coloration of upperparts and size. Four subspecies normally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • aigneri (Laubman, 1913) - SE Turkey, Iraq, Iran, S Transcaspia, E Arabia and Pakistan.
  • indicus (Boddaert, 1783) - E Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
  • lankae (Koelz, 1939) - Sri Lanka.
  • atronuchalis (Jerdon, 1864) - NE India (Assam) and Myanmar to N Malaysia and Vietnam.
