Taxonomy: Bucco mystacophanos Temminck, 1824, Sumatra.
Belongs to the group that also includes M. corvina, M. chrysopogon, M. rafflesii and M. javensis. Forms described as aurantiifrons from peninsular Thailand and humii from Borneo now included within nominate. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- mystacophanos (Temminck, 1824) - S Myanmar (SC Tenasserim), SW and peninsular Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia (except S), Sumatra and Borneo.
- ampala (Oberholser, 1912) - Batu Is, off W Sumatra.
