Taxonomy: Trochalopteron Milnei David, 1874, western Fujian, China.
Genus traditionally subsumed in Garrulax. Population in C highlands of Vietnam (C Annam) and presumably adjacent SE Laos probably represents an undescribed race, or possibly belongs with vitryi. Four subspecies recognized.

- sharpei Rippon, 1901 - N & E Myanmar, NW Thailand, N & C Laos, NW Vietnam, and S China (W, S & SE Yunnan, W Guangxi).
- sinianum Stresemann, 1930 - SE China (SE Sichuan, N Guizhou, C & NE Guangxi, S Hunan, N Guangdong).
- milnei David, 1874 - NW Fujian, in SE China.
- vitryi ( Delacour, 1932) - S Laos (Bolovens Plateau).
