Taxonomy: Picus (Chloropicus) Kirkii Malherbe, 1845, Tobago.
Forms a superspecies with V. chocoensis, V. cassini, V. affinis and V. maculifrons. Five subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • neglectus Bangs, 1901 - SW Costa Rica and W Panama, including Coiba I.
  • cecilii (Malherbe, 1849) - E Panama and W Colombia S to W Ecuador and extreme NW Peru (Pacific slope S to Lambayeque).
  • continentalis Hellmayr, 1906 - W & N Venezuela.
