Taxonomy: O.[riolus] haemorrhous Linnaeus, 1766, French Guiana.
Mitochondrial DNA data indicate rather distant relationship with C. cela. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • haemorrhous (Linnaeus, 1766) - SE Venezuela E to French Guiana, S to E Colombia, E Ecuador and N Brazil (Roraima).
  • pachyrhynchus Berlepsch, 1889 - Amazon Basin in Brazil (Amazonas and Pará S to Rondônia and NW Mato Grosso), E Peru and N Bolivia.
  • affinis Swainson, 1834 - E Brazil (Pernambuco and S Tocantins S to Santa Catarina), E Paraguay and NE Argentina (S to Corrientes).
