Taxonomy: Taenioptera erythropygia P. L. Sclater, 1853, Verdecocha, Pichincha, Ecuador.
Was formerly sometimes placed in Myiotheretes or Xolmis. Most recent authors prefer retention of monotypic genus on basis of internal and external morphology. Races poorly differentiated. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- orinomus Wetmore, 1946 - N & C Colombia (Santa Marta Mts and NE Andes).
- erythropygius (P. L. Sclater, 1853) - S Colombia (Nariño) S to W & C Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
