Taxonomy: Colymbus grisegena Boddaert, 1783, no locality; France designated.
Often erroneously spelt griseigena. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- grisegena (Boddaert, 1783) - E Europe, W & WC Asia; winters from North Sea E to Caspian and Aral Seas.
- holboellii Reinhardt, 1854 - E USSR, Manchuria, N Japan; W Canada, NW USA; winters from Japan and Korea through Aleutian Is to California; also E USA, S to Florida.
