Taxonomy: Pteroglossus bitorquatus Vigors, 1826, no locality = north-eastern Brazil.
Probably related more closely to P. inscriptus and P. viridis than to P. azara. Races sturmii and reichenowi considered by some authors to constitute two further distinct species, but they clearly share major features with nominate race, and differences between the various populations seem significant enough only for subspecific treatment; also, sturmii and reichenowi appear to hybridize, e.g. in SW Pará (Cururu Valley of upper R Tapajós) and N Mato Grosso. Three subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- sturmii Natterer, 1842 - NC Brazil S of Amazon, between R Madeira and R Tapajós, S to Rondônia, Bolivia (E Beni, NE Santa Cruz), thence E to C Mato Grosso (R Paraguay drainage, and E almost to R Xingu).
- reichenowi Snethlage, 1907 - S of Amazon, between R Tapajós and R Tocantins, S to N Mato Grosso.
- bitorquatus Vigors, 1826 - NE Brazil S of Amazon: Marajó I and E of R Tocantins to Maranhão.
