Taxonomy: Carbo Gaimardi Lesson and Garnot, 1828, Lima, au Pérou = San Lorenzo Island, roadstead of Lima.
Atlantic populations sometimes considered to form separate race cirriger. Sometimes placed in genus Stictocarbo. Monotypic.
Distribution: Coasts of S South America: in Pacific from near equator S to Chiloé I (SC Chile) and beyond; in Atlantic restricted to S Argentina.
