Taxonomy: Ara chloropterus G. R. Gray, 1859, no locality.
Original spelling has been taken as evidence that species name was created as a masculine noun; however, at least as likely to be a lapsus calumi, and long-standing feminine ending should thus be retained. Monotypic.

Distribution: E Panama through lowland Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas and Brazil S to Paraguay and W to E Ecuador, E Peru and NE Bolivia; formerly in N Argentina.
