Taxonomy: Pionopsitta pyrrhops Salvin, 1876, Santa Rita and San Lucas, Ecuador.
Forms superspecies with H. amazonina and H. fuertesi, and all three have commonly been considered conspecific. Monotypic.

Distribution: SW Ecuador to NW Peru.
