Taxonomy: Bucco Rafflesii Lesson, 1839, Bangka Island, Sumatra.
Belongs to the group that also includes M. corvina, M. chrysopogon, M. mystacophanos and M. javensis; apparently related rather closely to M. javensis and M. chrysopogon. Birds from S Myanmar and Malay Peninsula described as race malayensis, those from Belitung I and Mendanau Is as billitonis and those from Borneo as borneensis, but no constant differences in plumage coloration or size sufficient to warrant subspecific recognition. Monotypic.

Distribution: S Myanmar (S Tenasserim) and peninsular Thailand S to Singapore, E Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung, and Borneo.
