Taxonomy: Anas rufina Pallas, 1773, Caspian Sea and lakes of the Tartarian Desert.
Usually considered a link between dabbling ducks and Aythya pochards. Hybridization recorded in captivity with several species of genera Anas and Aythya. Monotypic.
Distribution: Scattered populations in W Europe, from S and E Spain and S France eastwards; bulk of population from Black Sea and Turkey E to NW China.
