Taxonomy: A[mpelis] rubro-cristata d’Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1837, Ayopayo, Cochabamba, Bolivia.
Genus appears to form a clade with Doliornis and Zaratornis; anatomical research and recent genetic data indicate close relationship to Phytotoma. Monotypic.
Distribution: N Colombia (Santa Marta Mts), also Sierra de Perijá (Colombia-W Venezuela border); and Andes from W Venezuela (S from NE Trujillo) and Colombia S to Bolivia (S to Santa Cruz).
