Taxonomy: Charadrius ruficapillus Temminck, 1822, New South Wales.
Forms superspecies with C. marginatus, C. alexandrinus and C. javanicus; all of these have on occasion been considered conspecific (see page 386). Monotypic.
Distribution: Australia, mainly avoiding arid interior; Tasmania.
