Other common names: New Zealand/Red-breasted Dotterel
Taxonomy: Charadrius obscurus Gmelin, 1789, Dusky Sound, South Island, New Zealand.
Occasionally placed in Pluvialis or awarded monospecific genus Pluviorhynchus. Has alternatively been linked with C. bicinctus. Recently divided in two races, based on differences in morphometrics, plumage, ecology and behaviour. Two subspecies recognized.
